WITH A VISION TO REINVIGORATE PRIDE IN THE HISTORY OF CASWELL COUNTY, SAVE ITS ARCHITECTURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE, AND PRESERVE THE NARRATIVES OF ALL PEOPLE WHO CALL CASWELL COUNTY HOME, A GROUP OF LOCAL CITIZENS AND PROPERTY OWNERS FORMED A NEW NON-PROFIT IN CASWELL COUNTY SOLELY DEDICATED TO HISTORIC PRESERVATION, PUBLIC HISTORY AND HERITAGE TOURISM.
PRESERVATION CASWELL’S LEADERSHIP
STERLING CARTER
The History of Caswell County has been Sterling’s calling since he was nine years old. Developing into a local historian, he spent many years and thousands of volunteer hours with the former Caswell County Historical Association, and introduced historic tourism to downtown Yanceyville at a young age, sharing his knowledge and love of Caswell County’s history with thousands of visitors over the years. A native resident of Leasburg, his family has called Caswell County home for over 275 years. He served as Caswell County Commissioner from 2016 to 2020 and is finishing his bachelors degree in American Indian Studies and History at UNC-Pembroke with plans to pursue a PhD in history in the near future. Faced with the decline of local history and preservation efforts in Caswell, Sterling decided now was the time to act and formed Preservation Caswell as a result. When he is not working on his college coursework, Sterling works as a professional genealogist and creative writer.

JERRY NIX
Veteran preservationist and antique collector extraordinaire, Jerry Nix is no stranger to the field of Historic Preservation or Caswell County. Although not a native of Caswell, his passion for saving endangered historic properties led him to Yanceyville during the COVID years. A native of Gibsonville, he has served over 38 years on the Guilford County Historic Preservation Commission, where he served as Chair and Vice Chair. He also helped found the Gibsonville Museum and Historical Society, serving on their Board for many years including serving as Chair and Vice Chair. He has personally saved and restored eleven historic properties and twice has been the recipient of the Gertrude S. Carraway Award of Merit from Preservation North Carolina. His experience and expertise will no doubt propel professional historic preservation efforts in Caswell County through his commitment to Preservation Caswell.

BILLY WHITE
“Social Chairman” Billy White, knows intimately well what it is like to be the steward of a historic property in Caswell County. He has promoted and supported local historic research, heritage events and tourism for many years. He loves people and embraces the future through his grounded knowledge of the past. He hopes Caswell County can be one grand catalyst drawing scholars, students of history and tourists alike knowing we can accomplish so many historic preservation goals through simple socialization, fellowship and by working together. Billy’s generous spirit and forward thinking ideas are the core of his commitment to Preservation Caswell.

Lisa’s professional career spanned 45 years as a registered nurse. For over two decades, however, she has been a passionate genealogist. She has participated in historic tourism in the past, loves historic cemeteries and wishes each individual and every generation would honor its past with appropriate care and respect. She hopes to inspire a new generation of stewardship as part of her commitment to Preservation Caswell.

Friendly and enthusiastic about history and historic preservation, Elisabeth is restoring the home of her ancestors in Caswell County, grateful to be its steward into the future. She hopes to inspire a new generation of preservationists through her commitment to Preservation Caswell. When she’s not working on her house or researching its history, she is a Respiratory Therapist and the mother of three sons.
